Raid 49 - 26 April 1916

The Raid

There was only 1 airship involved in this raid, either the LZ93 or 95. It was seen off the Kent coast then dropped 3 bombs in the sea off Deal where it was heavily fired on. After this it came inland over Sandwich then to Westgate where the AA guns opened fire.

The location was then lost due to ‘the noise of traffic in Margate and passing trains’.

Victims & Damage

No damage was done and there were no casualties.

Summary

It isn’t clear what the raid was meant to achieve.

 

Weather – Light wind and clear

 

Response –

AA guns fired on the airship at Westgate and there was one shell which was reported to have hit. A plane took off from the aerodrome but didn’t catch the airship.
